SOUTH RIVER VINEYARD
A Restored Antique Church that is now an Estate Winery with Stunning Views.
Many know us as the “church winery” because our winery is housed in a century old church originally located in Shalersville, Ohio. Now operating as a boutique winery isince 2002, South River Vineyard has established itself as a quiet, relaxing, and most unique place to enjoy a fantastic view of the vineyards with quality wine and good company. South River Vineyard is a must see winery when you are visiting the area. One of the largest growers of vineifera growers in the area, making old world selections that are suited for cooler climates.
The story behind the idea comes from owner, Gene Sigel. While on his way to Kent, Sigel noticed an abandoned Methodist Episcopal Church. Intrigued by the structure, he stopped and asked a neighbor for permission to photograph it. She told him he could have the building for the trouble of dismantling it. A week later, Sigel was making plans to move the building, piece by piece, to his site in Geneva. Built in 1892, the winery still maintains the original pews, interior door, wainscoting, flooring, and some of the stained glass windows.
